Your Guide To Hypoallergenic Makeup

Does your skin react in any way when makeup is applied? This can be in the form of Itchiness, Soreness, redness, raised bumps, flakey skin and dryness?

It is all well and good having makeup that ‘lasts all day’ but these ‘long lasting’ formulas are set to be heavy duty and sink into the skin causing your skin to feel claustrophobic. If this is the case, then the first step would be to try some Hypoallergenic makeup products.

In general Hypoallergenic makeup claims to contain less irritants than regular products, helping them be more suitable for sensitive skin & therefore resulting in fewer allergic reactions. They are usually fragrance free (as added fragrance can be an irritant) .

The UK alone has over 14% of women allergic to the ingredients in many makeup products so there is definitely a need for more ‘sensitive makeup’ but one thing that needs to be clear is that Hypoallergenic makeup doesn’t mean you won’t have a reaction of some sort ( you could be allergic to any ingredient) and Hypoallergenic makeup is not regulated by the FDA so it may not always be the answer you are looking for but its definitely a place to start.  Always do a spot test for a few days with any new product you are trying, If you continue to react to products, then find a local dermatologist who can carry out a multitude of tests to pinpoint the actual ingredient that is giving you grief.

Our lovely work placement student Grace Meyer (@gracemeyer_sfx) has put together a list & links of makeup products for you to browse, covering all price points and  products for the whole of your makeup routine.

Please ask if you have any other questions.

Love Donna & Grace!
